- Audio in film can be put into three different categories: Dialogue, Sound Effects and Music. Audio can be within the film’s world or outside it.
- Diegetic audio occur within a film’s world. These are sounds that can be heard by the characters, such as a radio or a television.
- Non diegetic audio exist outside a film’s world, such as music that’s played over a scene for effect. Non diegetic sounds are those that aren’t contained in the narrative.
- Audio can be used expressively to create a particular effect or an emotion, such as thunder heard in a horror film.
- Audio can be used realistically, where they try to mimic sounds as they would be heard in the real world.
- Audio can be used to do the following things: create a mood, feeling or emotion, create a sense of realism, create tension, help set the scene, advance the narrative
Some words to use when discussing sound:
â–¸timbre the character or quality of a sound
â–¸pitch the highness or lowness of a tone
â–¸rhythm the systematic arrangement of sounds
â–¸tone the overall quality of the sound
â–¸instruments what is used to create the sound
